What Is Casino and Gambling Link Injection?

Definition

Casino and gambling link injection is a type of SEO spam where attackers hack a website and fill it with hidden links, pages, or titles promoting online casinos, slot games, and betting sites. The goal is to borrow the site's search reputation to rank gambling pages, often for audiences in countries where online gambling is restricted.

How It Works

The injections follow the same patterns as other SEO spam, tuned for gambling affiliates:

  • Hidden links: blocks of casino links placed off-screen or with zero height, visible to search engines but not visitors. GoDaddy's 2025 report calls hidden link injection the most common type of gambling spam.
  • Hijacked pages: Sucuri has documented attackers creating a real folder with the same name as an existing page (such as /about/) containing a spam index.html. Because Apache and Nginx serve real files and folders before WordPress handles the URL, the spam page replaces the real one.
  • Doorway pages and overlays: new pages or full-screen overlays that push visitors to gambling sites.
  • Cloaked database payloads: spam stored in the WordPress database and printed only on certain URLs.

Sucuri reports that most hacked sites hosting casino spam are built on WordPress, and that much of it targets countries with strict gambling laws, such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Turkey. "Slot gacor" is a common Indonesian spam term.

Real-World Example

In November 2025, Sucuri analyst Ben Martin described a client site where one page, "programs," showed "Slot Gacor" casino spam in Google results. No such folder existed. Code at the bottom of the theme's functions.php loaded a payload from a database option named wp_footers_logic, with a fallback copy in wp-content/cache/style.dat and a remote domain to refetch it. The same code was planted in a plugin file, and another plugin file contained code to reinfect both if they were cleaned. Deleting one copy would not have fixed the site.

Why It Matters for a Small Business

GoDaddy's 2025 website malware report found that gambling spam overtook Japanese spam for the first time in over a decade, affecting 126,312 websites its SiteCheck scanner detected (the figures cover sites GoDaddy scanned, not the whole web). Sucuri's 2023 report found gambling SEO spam on 87,201 sites scanned remotely, a 200% increase from 2022. For a local business, casino titles in your Google results tell customers your site is hacked, and the layered persistence above means quick fixes rarely hold.

How to Spot It / How DTS Handles It

Signs: casino or "slot" titles under your domain in Google; Indonesian or Thai text in search snippets; folders named like your pages; unknown entries in wp_options; odd .dat files in cache folders; and spam that returns after cleanup.

After a forensic backup, DTS runs core and plugin checksum checks and finds every copy and reinfection hook across files, options, cron events, and the database. With the owner's approval we remove them together, close the entry point, rotate salts and passwords, and clean up the index through Search Console.
