Data Loss will happen. Hard drives fail, laptops get dropped, water drips through ceilings, fires happen… Yes bad things happen and at some point that hard drive you save all your business files on will fail. It might not be today or tomorrow and it may give you warning. But it may not. In fact, most hard drive failures give no warning.
Fortunately, most drives have a good long serviceable life and don’t abruptly fail before data is copied off. However…. it happens
Last week I had a call from a business that had a NAS device that abruptly stopped working. They had started attempts at data recovery and needed help. Unfortunately after two-three days of attempts to recover files and only pulling fragments out of the damaged disk it just wasn’t enough to reconstruct the one critical file that had not been backed up.
Quickbooks
Everything was bundled in there, invoices, inventory. Everything.
Backups had been set, but somehow THAT file got unchecked 2 years ago.
Yep, THAT file.
Let this be a reminder to you and your business that the security of your business depends on your IT policy with regards to backups.
A couple years ago a business that I knew had a crypto-locker virus attack and start encrypting every file on their server. They had NO backups. It could have cost them their business. Fortunately I was able to one by one restore files from shadow copy. (Backups need to be inaccessible by network users to protect against accidental deletion/corruption.)
Make a backup plan.
Check that backups are running.
Make sure that you can restore from the backups.
One of the things we do a lot of work and planning in is backup strategies for clients. We try to make sure that our backup plan has several layers so that we don’t have a single point of failure. We make sure that we have onsite and offsite backups and follow the adage of not placing all our eggs in one basket.
We can help you. We can help ensure your business has it’s important files taken care of when bad things happen. Give us a call or send a message today and let’s talk about how we can help you and your business secure your data.
